Click here to explore this network of trails managed by Mad River Riders. Look for the trailhead kiosk and head up into the hills on the trail called Revolution. From here, you can find miles and miles of trails for hiking, running, and biking by crossing underneath the Route 100 bridge and traveling across the American Flatbread parking lot. It’s very flat and includes a parking lot at the southern end.

This 0.5 mile lollipop loop in on land owned by the Town of Waitsfield and features great access to the Mad River for swimming and fishing. Although it’s not an official route (YET!), you can follow the road to Route 100 and carefully use the road’s shoulder to access the next section south-the Austin Parcel. You’ll follow the Path along the river and through the woods to Fiddler’s Green. Dive into the woods behind the Waitsfield Cemetery and travel down to the Mad River where you’ll find a picnic table for lunch, a snack, or just to relax. This 1/3 mile section is a little more vigorous with a hill and some uneven terrain, but it’s still very accessible to many people. You’ll come to a shopping plaza where you can then cross Route 100 again to find the next section that is tucked behind the cemetery. Head southwest into the wetland on a long boardwalk-keep your eye out for a lot of birds in here. After you follow the sidewalk towards Irasville for 1/3 mile and then cross Route 100 (carefully, of course!) onto the Carroll Road boardwalk.

Follow the top of the dam until you find a lawn and head back to the sidewalk by going past the Maclay Architects office. Follow the Mad River upstream past a popular swimming hole to find a very old dam that years ago helped store floating logs before they went to the mill. Follow the sidewalk to to Bridge Street and you’ll find a community park that is partly on Town land and mostly on the property of a generous private landowner. Wait’s Way is a 0.5 mile flat set on a hard, smooth(ish) surface.

Hosford Heart of the Valleyįrom Wait’s Way (behind the Waitsfield Elementary School) to Irasville, you’ll find access to many local businesses, the Mad River, boardwalks, views, and an amazing community. The West Greenway is protected by a conservation easement held by our partners at the Vermont Land Trust and a trail access easement held by the Town of Waitsfield. Bring your swimwear or fishing rod if you would like to have some fun in the river. To the west, you can see the Hartshorn Organic Farm and maple sugaring operation. You’ll find beautiful views of Sugarbush’s upper ski trails and the Monroe Skyline of the Green Mountains. Along the way, the path passes a lovely gazebo where you can sit at the picnic table and enjoy the sounds and views of the Mad River as it winds its way north. The West Greenway starts at the parking lot off Meadow Road, just below Route 100, and continues along the Mad River for about 1.2 miles where it ends across from the 1824 House. We hope to connect this section to the West Greenway and Moretown in the near future. Financial support for the project came from the four towns, the Vermont Land & Water Conservation Fund Grant Program, and generous donations from many community members. The purchase and site improvements were made possible through efforts of dedicated volunteers and assistance from the Vermont Land Trust. The Mad River Valley Recreation District acquired this land in 2017 to provide for the youth and public recreation needs of Fayston, Moretown, Waitsfield & Warren. While this area is a former quarry and an airfield for small planes, the Mad River Park Recreation Fields now serve as a vital recreation resource for the local community. There’s a post and beam pavilion and five benches. Here you’ll find a 0.5 mile grassed loop that circles the recreation fields. About each section (north to south) Mad River Park
